Solar energy is created by nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun. This process releases a great amount of energy in the form of waves and particles that are constantly flowing away from the sun and throughout the solar system. Solar lights are essentially small power systems that collect energy from the sun and convert it into lighting. During the day, sunlight is converted to electricity and stored in a battery. At night, the battery supplies the electricity to the light (usually LED) until it is all used up or the photoreceptor shuts off as daylight reappears. Solar lights contain several components: a solar cell, a rechargeable battery, a LED light and a photoreceptor. All these components are mounted to work as a single unit that collect, store energy and convert it into lighting.

There are three main factors that affect the effectiveness of a solar light:

  • Number of sunlight hours collected by the solar cells (direct and indirect sunlight);

  • Size and quality of the battery;

  • Daily usage of solar lighting.

Working time of the battery depends on several factors including the quality of the equipment and the daily power consumption. Some batteries can last from 4 to 6 hours and others a maximum of 10 to 12 hours. 

 

The lifespan of these devices is mainly dependent of the battery lifetime. Usually the batteries in solar lights can be expected to last a maximum of about 3-4 years. On average they last about 2 years before they have to be replaced as they are no longer able to hold enough energy to provide lighting. You will know that it is time to change battery when the lights are unable to maintain charge during a considerable amount of time. Note that, for a large number of solar devices, you can replace the battery and the replacement equipment can usually be ordered from the manufacturer.

 

Solar energy systems don’t require a lot of maintenance. That’s one of the big advantages of these systems and devices. But there are a couples of rules you should follow to increase both the efficiency and lifetime of your outdoor equipment:

  • Clean the solar cells regularly. These devices are usually placed around gardens or in places where will become dirty, making it difficult for the solar cells to receive enough sunlight. Wiping the panel surface every two weeks will do the job.

  • Check if your solar device is not being covered by plants or if is being affected by the shades of nearby structures. That can probably happen if your solar equipment is installed in a garden and it will substantially affect its performance.

  • Check if your solar device is not receiving street lighting or house lighting. The equipment may detect this low level of light and will stop providing illumination.

  • Store your solar equipment indoors during winter or in long periods of rain / cloud / wind. Many of these devices have glass and can be damaged by extreme wind storms and therefore should be stored inside to protect them.

 

There are a couple of features you should be aware of before purchasing outdoor solar equipment. See below the most relevant:

  • Battery. Check out if the product has batteries included and what is the charging time and working time of the device. Check out in the project description if the battery can be replaced and if it can be ordered from the manufacturer.

  • Brightness / lumens output. The lumens of a light can be explained as how visually bright the light is. The higher the number, the brighter the bulb. We advise you to take a closer look on lumens if you want to determine the product brightness.

  • Lighting / Brightness Modes. Some outdoor solar lights have different brightness modes. This is very convenient for someone who plans to use the lights for multiple settings. Check out in the product description the different lighting modes available.

  • Lighting Range / Scope. For several devices you’ll be able to see in the product description the lighting scope (measured in square meters or square feet). Check out in the project description the lighting range of the equipment.

  • Automatic On/Off settings. The majority of solar lighting devices come with an automatic on/off switch. The solar device senses the light around and turns ON when the sun goes down and OFF at dawn. Check out the existence of automatic on/off settings.

  • Waterproof level. Check out in the project description if the solar device has a protection standard. You’ll usually see an IP (or “Ingress Protection”) rating, a protection rating that will help you know if the product is protected against liquid intrusions.

  • Warranty. It is always a good idea to review the warranty coverage of the product. Check out in the project description the existence of a warranty.
