2018 Global Off-Grid Solar Market Trends Report

An assessment of the global off-grid solar market undertaken by the World Bank Group through its Lighting Global Program.

In 2010 the World Bank Group published the first Lighting Africa report which quantified the significant business potential of delivering lighting to over 600 million people in Africa through portable solar lights. According to the report, seven years later, that market has evolved and expanded substantially. Sales of over 130 million devices since 2010, penetrating approximately 17% of the global potential market, and generating 3.9 billion in cumulative revenue. Also growing acknowledgement from governments and development institutions who are committing significant resources to the sector.
